Transposon

Transposons, sometimes called “jumping genes,” are a piece of DNA that can move from one place to another in the cell’s chromosomes.  Transposons are thought to be a major driver of evolution because they not only genetically modify a cell’s genes when they jump from one place to another, they can sometimes jump from one species to another.
